Thinking Globally: Counterinsurgency, Climate Change, and Consumption of Culture Presented by New York University Professor Nicholas Mirzoeff. Somali Immigrants in the United States Denison University will host Cawo Abdi as she presents a lecture on Somali immigrants in the United States in Higley Hall Auditorium (100 Ridge Road) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28. The event is free and open to the public. Abdi is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota. Her research includes an examination of the gender and transnational relations of Somalis in Minnesota and East Africa. Abdi has authored several articles appearing in books and journals, including ???Contested Norms and Values in Transnational Families," ???Convergence of Civil War and the Religious Right: Re-Imagining Somali Women," and ???Refugees, Gender Based Violence and Resistance: A Case Study of Somali Women in Kenyan Camps."

Eyewitness Gaza: Israel???s 22-Day Assault and the Aftermath Presented by Barbara Lubin, founder and executive director of MECA, the Middle East Children???s Alliance, a nonprofit humanitarian aid organization dedicated to supporting children and families in Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon. She is a life-long peace, justice and disability activist and has led nearly twenty delegations of North Americans to Palestine/Israel, Iraq, and Lebanon. Lubin has lectured on the issue of Middle East politics and the plight of the children in the region.
